Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me. - The Mainers looked to avenge their loss from Sunday as they welcomed the Keene Swamp Bats to town. However, it was similar to what happened a few days ago as Sanford fell behind and Keene added late on its way to the win, 9-4.
Tonight's result evened the season series at two and tied the teams in the standings at 10-14.
The punches started early with Keene scoring a pair in the top of the first. A sac fly from Tony Santa Maria (Rutgers) drove in Lucas Costello (Wake Forest), later, Dan Covino (Central Connecticut State) scored on the single from Garrett Rice (Vanderbilt), 2-0.
In the bottom half of the first, the Mainers landed their first blow as Quinn McDaniel (Maine) led off the inning with a towering drive into the trees in left field, 2-1. It was McDaniel's third home run of the year, tying him for the team-high.
The second inning followed suit as the Swamp Bats connected a couple more times and then Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) launched one off the wall in left that brought in Costello and Covino, 4-1.
Once again, Sanford would cut the lead down to one as in the third, Aidan Kane picked up an RBI on his single that pushed in McDaniel. Then, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) would score on the double from college teammate, Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt).
In the fifth, Keene extended the lead as an RBI triple from Santa Maria scored Ross. Santa Maria would eventually be pushed across home plate, 6-3.
In the seventh, the Moose would cut the lead down to one on another McDaniel RBI, 6-4, that is the closest that Sanford would get as the rest of the night Kenee had everything working.
The Swamp Bats were on their way to a second straight win and landed some haymakers with another three runs as insurance. Parker Murphy (Jacksonville) would come in from the bullpen and knock down the Mainers.
The green and yellow will hit the road for the next two days starting with a road trip to White River Junction to take on Upper Valley. Brian Craven (Davidson) is expected to be the starter for Sanford against the Nighthawks.
