Vermont Mountaineers News Release
KEENE, N.H - A strong start by Joseph Kosowsky and a four-run fifth guided the Vermont Mountaineers to 7-2 victory over the Keene Swampbats on Thursday night at Alumni Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League play. The Mountaineers improved to 22-3 on the season while Keene dropped to 10-15 on the year.
After three scoreless innings and a tight pitching matchup, Vermont finally pushed across the game's first run. Stephen DiTomaso reached on an error by the shortstop, before moving to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out for the second out, Jack Cone singled to right field and gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
After Kosowsky got through the fourth on just seven pitches, the Mountaineers had a four run inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Evan Fox reached on a fielder's choice. He advanced on a wild pitch with just one away. Tyler Cox walked to put a pair of runners on and chased Keene's starter Matthew Buchanan from the game. Adam Retzbach welcomed Garrett French to the game on the first pitch with a single to right field as both runners were running on the pitch. Fox was able to score, before the big blow by Tom Josten made it 5-0 Vermont with a first pitch home run to center field.
Kosowsky cruised through the fifth, with DiTomaso flashing the leather at third and a fly out to center for a quick inning. Kosowsky retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced through five innings.
Vermont continued to pressure the Swampbats with a one-out single by Fox. The left fielder stole second. He then scored all the way from second on a ground out to short by Cox to make it 6-0 in favor of the guests.
Kosowsky got a pair of quick outs in the seventh, before giving way to Luke Carpenter, who got a fly out to center to keep the Swampbats off the board.
However, the shutout was broken up in the eighth with a solo shot by Garrett Rice. After Carpenter got a pair of strikeouts, Keene again put up another home run, this time by Tyler McKenzie to make it 6-2 in favor of Vermont. A close play to first ended the inning to limit the damage.
Vermont added a run in the ninth to get a run back. Retzbach walked, and advanced on an infield single by Anthony DeFabbia. Retzbach stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.
Kosowsky earned the win for Vermont, going six and two thirds innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits and a walk. Buchanan suffered the loss for Keene in four and a third innings pitched. He gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a pair of walks. Brendan Pattermann closed out the game in his second appearance of the summer and struckout the side to hold on for the win.
Fox and Josten paced the offense for Vermont as both had a pair of hits, with Josten blasting his third home run and drove in three runs. Cox also drove in a pair of runs.
Vermont gained a full game over Upper Valley in the North Division standings after the Nighthawks lossed a 4-3 decision to Sanford on Thursday night. The Vermont rivals will play at Historic Montpelier Recreation Field for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. It'll be the fourth game of the Governor's Cup Series with the Mountaineers leading that series 2-1.
