Sanford Mainers News Release
The Sanford Mainers were back to an even 6-6 record after falling to the Keene Swamp Bats at the beginning of the week, but on Wednesday they jumped ahead after defeating the Danbury Westerners 4-3 in twelve innings.
Pitching defined the contest as both pitching staffs were able to combine for 31 strike outs across twelve innings with Mainers pitchers claming twenty of them.
Jake Thomas got things started in the top of the third inning when he pulled a ball down the right field line and over the fence for his second home run of the year putting the Moose up 1-0.
The Westerners tied it in the fourth and then jumped ahead in the fifth. Johnny Caputo was on third base with one out and scored on a suicide squeeze by Joe Runco. Just one inning later after back-to-back walks, Alex Tuccio singled to center scoring Christopher Riopedre.
Runners were at the corners for the Westerners with two outs. Tuccio stole second, but when the throw to second was cut off by Troy Black, Alex Cruz who was on third broke for home and after a bit of confusion by the defense, was able to score.
The Mainers were blanked through the next few innings, but scraped their way back starting in the top of the eighth.
Cole Martin singled to center and then advanced to second on a single by John Howell. After a strike out during the next at bat, Black hit a line drive to center that popped out of the glove of Daniel Spingola allowing Martin to score the Mainers second run.
One inning later the Mainers were able to tie the game when Anthony Papio was waved around third and scored when Westerners catcher, Nick Octavi, mishandled a play at the plate.
Steven Rice came in to the game for the Mainers and Craig Lejeune for the Westerners. The two of them shut down the respective opposing line-up in relief combining for seven innings with twelve strike outs.
However, it was Nic Wilson of the Mainers who was able to top Lejeune blasting a 2-2 pitch well over the left field wall for his first home run of the year, putting the Mainers ahead 4-3.
Iannick Remillard came into the game in the bottom half of the twelfth retiring all three hitters he faced to lock up the game and the victory for the Mainers.
Rice has collected a win in each of the three appearances he has made this season while Remillard picks up his second save.
The Mainers are set to take on the Vermont Mountaineers on Thursday night at Goodall Park in Sanford at 6:30pm. James Bourque is slated to take the hill.
