Sanford Mainers News Release

The last time the Vermont Mountaineers and the Sanford Mainers met was up in Montpelier just over a week ago where dominant pitching from both sides decided the game, though the Mountaineers were able to grab one run to beat the Mainers 1-0.

Tonight the Mainers tried to take game two of the two game season series, but after trailing 2-1 in the eighth and the rain hit, the game was called and Vermont walked away with the victory.

The action got started in the top of the third when the Mountaineers scored a run on an RBI single by Mike Triller. Kyle Smith led off the inning with a single to right and was followed by Matt MacDowell who also singled to right. Mainers starting pitcher James Bourque got Brad Kaczka to strike out swinging, but then gave up a third single to right to Triller scoring Smith.

In the top of the sixth Vermont added another run when Triller walked and then advanced to second on a sac-bunt by Bret Dennis. Kenny Townes then smacked a double to right to score Triller. Mountaineer's starter Joey Graziano had the Mainers shut out through six innings, but was replaced in the seventh by Brandon Alphin. Cole Martin took four pitches for a lead-off walk and then advanced to second on a sac-bunt by Scott Heath. Will Cooper flied out on the next play for the first out, but Martin then scored when John Howell singled through the right side.

Just one inning later Jake Thomas led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Nic Wilson struck out swinging for the first out, but after the Mountaineers went for a pitching change, the rain became too much and the tarp was put on the field.

It was all she wrote at Goodall Park when mother nature didn't want to pull back on the rain forcing the game to be called. Bourque drops to 0-2 on the season after picking up the loss, while Vermont's Graziano gets his first win of the year.

The Mainers will be off tomorrow, but will be back on the bus on Saturday to travel to Saratoga Springs, New York to take on the Saratoga Brigade. Nick Poore is expected to take the hill for the Mainers with game time being set for 6:30pm.
