Mainers Come Up Short in Shootout Against Valley

June 24, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

HOLYOKE, Ma. - The streak has been snapped.

After starting 1-9 on the year, the Mainers won five straight games, but the Valley Blue Sox came from behind to continue their winning streak. Sanford tried to rally in the ninth, but ultimately fell short, 10-9.

Sanford falls to 6-10 with the loss, meanwhile, Valley wins its fifth consecutive and jumps to 9-6.

Things got off to a hot start in the first with Grant Knipp (Campbell) roping a triple into the right-field corner, scoring Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt). Moments later, David Bermudez (Manhattan) would hit a sac-fly to score Knipp, 2-0.

The Blue Sox would tie it up in the bottom of the second after Blaze Fadio (Lafayette) drove in Michael Casaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic College). Then on the next batter, Charlie Ludwick (Eastern Kentucky) scored on the groundout from Steven Luttazi (UMass), 2-2.

Just a half-inning later, the Moose would jump back on top as Knipp delivered again, this time going to right-center and bringing in Quinn McDaniel (Maine) and Jayson Kramer (St. Johns), 4-2.

The damage did not stop there as in the fourth McDaniel singled, scoring Joey Rezek (East Carolina) and Jake Rainess (Maine). Hewett would get his first RBI off the season when he doubled, allowing McDaniel to score, 7-2.

Valley would keep things close off the RBI single from Luttazi that scored Ludwick and Fadio in the home half of the fourth, 7-4.

Once again Sanford would tack on another run, this time an RBI single from Rezek, his first of the year, 8-4.

However, the Blue Sox became advantageous and used some Mainer miscues to come back. Anthony Sherwin (Bucknell) cut into the lead with an RBI double. He would come home to score on the sac-fly from Sam Franco (Purdue), then on the sac fly from Casaleggio that drove McDaniel too far back Jack Krause (Bowling Green) came in, 8-7.

In the seventh, the struggles continued, this time from the mound, as the green and yellow would go through three pitchers.

A walk, a single, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Blue Sox. Jake Poindexter (Georgia) replaced Zachary Rodgers (UMass-Lowell) and would walk Krause to tie the game, then another walk of Fadio put Valley on top, 9-8.

A heads-up Krause scored on the wild pitch from Blake MacMillan (Niagara), 10-8.

The Mainers would pull within one in the ninth off the RBI single from Bermudez, but the late rally would come up one run short.

Sanford closes out the third week of the season with a weekend series against Winnipesaukee. Saturday's game is set for 6 p.m. from Robbie Mills Field. Coleman Willis (Georgia) is expected to be on the mound.
