Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me. - The pitching this season has been the strength for Sanford, which was on display again on Thursday. Sonny Fauci mowed down North Shore batters and Jake Rainess used the long ball to help the Mainers beat North Shore for their fifth straight win, 3-1.
Fauci (St. Johns) got his second start on the mound for Sanford and wasted no time getting to business. Despite finding himself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, the right-hander struck out two in a row to end the threat.
His teammates helped him out in the home half of the first, Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown) sparked a two-out rally with a single. Then a base hit by Marco Castillo (Georgetown) and an error from the right fielder, Trace Willhoite (Lipscomb), saw Dapkewicz score from first, 1-0.
It was a pleasant sight to see Castillo back in the lineup after missing the last few games with an injury.
Following some more scoreless baseball, the Mainers would add another run off the solo home run from Rainess (Maine) in the fourth, 2-0. For Rainess it was his first long ball of the year.
Fauci would continue to mow down Navigator hitters before retiring after the seventh, closing his night at seven innings pitched, with 14 strikeouts.
North Shore would cut the lead in half in the eighth off the RBI double from Jake Gustin (Bryant) that scored Jake McElroy (Holy Cross), 2-1.
The green and yellow would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half as Kevin Skagerlind (UMass) scored on the RBI groundout from Devan Bade (Binghamton), 3-1.
Brian Craven would come out in the ninth and work around two base runners, including a nice play from a charging Bade for the final out, to give Sanford its fifth straight win.
With the win, Sanford improves to 6-9 on the year, while North Shore falls to 3-12.
The Mainers are back on the road tomorrow as they travel to Holyoke for a date with the Valley Blue Sox. Kyle Magrans (Vanderbilt) is expected to be on the bump with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
