Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers are still in search for their first win. After a couple of scheduled days off and a rainout, the Moose hosted the Mystic Schooners for the first of five meetings between the two. Poor defense by the Schooners was matched with timely hitting to top the Mainers 8-5.

Evan Hill got the start for the Mainers, but his outing didn't go as planned. He lasted only 2.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, and 3 runs. He was followed by six pitchers out of the bullpen in which the seven allowed 17 hits, 8 runs (7 earned), 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts.

Mystic's pitching staff was not too far off of the same pattern. Mike Eckerle got the start lasting only 3 innings, giving up 3 hits and 4 runs (1 earned).

The action started immediately in the top of the first when both Keaton Flint and Tyler Boyd hit back-to-back doubles to tack up the game's first run. The Schooners scored again before recording an out on an RBI single by Joel Rosencrance.

With the score sitting at 3-0 already in the first, the Mainers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half when Sam Balzano scored all the way from first on a throwing error by Matt O'Herron at third on a Jake Thomas ground ball. Thomas came around to score on a single by Cole Martin later in the inning.

The Mainers tied it up in the bottom of the second when Nic Wilson scored after being walked to start the inning. Thomas who helped bring the game within one an inning earlier reached on a fielder's choice allowing Wilson to cross the plate.

The Schooners took the lead in the top of the sixth when Boyd hit a deep solo home run to right, but it was the top of the ninth when Mystic put the game out of reach, scoring three more times to put the score at 8-4.

Three outs were left for the green and yellow to bring the game back within their favor. They scored one more run with two outs on a wild pitch that scored Anthony Papio, but Wilson went down swinging to end the game.

The two teams combined to strand more than twenty base runners on the night. The Mainers drop to 0-3 while the Schooners improve to 3-0. The Mainers will be off again tomorrow, but will return home to host the North Adams SteepleCats on Friday night at 6:30pm. James Bourque is expected to get the start.
