Swamp Bats Suffer Another One Run Loss, Fall To 0-3

Keene Swamp Bats News Release

After multiple rainouts to the start the season, the Swamp Bats were back to playing baseball on Wednesday night, only to fall to the Holyoke Blue Sox 7-6.

After struggling in his first start of the season against Ocean State, the Swamp Bat starter Nick Neumann didn't fare much better on Wednesday night. Neumann only lasted three innings, giving up six runs on nine hits.

Neumann got roughed up early in the first inning, giving up four runs to start the game as Vahn Bozoian and Travis Maezes each went deep in the opening frame. The Blue Sox went on to score a run in each of the next three innings, stretching their lead to 7-0. Coming in to relieve Neumann would be new arrival David Sosebee out of the University of Georgia. The sophomore fared well in his first appearance, throwing five strong innings, only surrendering one run on three hits while striking out four Blue Sox.

The Swamp Bats offense did their best to make things interesting. After tacking on one run in the bottom of the third, Zach Lauricella launched a three run homer of his own to cap a four run bottom of the fifth. Keene would cut the deficit all the way back to 7-6 one inning later after a wild pitch allowed Dylan Moore to score from third.

Joe McCarthy came on to pitch the top of the ninth inning, looking to keep the deficit at one run, and did so after getting three straight groundball outs.

But the Swamp Bat's comeback would fall just one run short as the Blue Sox closer Ben Rakus retired all three Keene hitters he faced to finish things off at Alumni Field.

After a rain-shortened week, the Swamp Bats have fallen in all three of their contests so far, dropping their record to 0-3. If the weather holds up, the Swamp Bats will aim to secure their first victory of the young season Thursday night at home against the Vermont Mountaineers. That game will begin at 6:30 p.m.
