PORTLAND, ME - Leemire Goldwire drained a three-pointer from the corner with just.5 seconds remaining for the Sioux Falls Skyforce (24-14) in their 99-98 win over the Maine Red Claws (23-16) at the Portland Expo Building.
The Skyforce, who were down by as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, were able to battle back and tie the game at 86-all, going on a 16-5 run midway through the fourth. Maine appeared poised to hold on for the win when they took a 97-94 lead with 4.5 seconds remaining in regulation, but David Bailey hit two free throws after drawing a foul to cut the deficit to one. Morris Almond split his attempts from the line, setting up for the shocker by Goldwire. Goldwire finished with 16 points in the game while teammate Alexander Johnson had an impressive double-double of 32 points and 19 boards for the Skyforce, with 12 of his points coming in the final frame.
Maurice Ager led Maine with 23 points while grabbing 8 boards. Teammate Paul Davis powered his way to a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Marcus Landry, assigned by the Celtics on Sunday, finished the game with 8 points while fellow newcomer Kurt Looby, acquired in a trade deadline deal with Albuquerque on Friday, contributed 7 points and 4 blocked shots in his debut.
With the loss, the Red Claws and Skyforce swap spots in the East Conference standings with Sioux Falls taking over second.
Sioux Falls will travel to Erie to take on the BayHawks on Tuesday while the Red Claws will return to action on Friday when they host the East Conference leading Iowa Energy.
