Mahomes Ties Two Club Records in 11-3 Win

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (21-22) moved one game closer to a playoff berth with the 11-3 victory over the Sioux City Explorers (23-20) on Monday Night at the Birdcage. Canaries' ace, Pat Mahomes (12-3), tied the Canaries franchise win (12) and strikeout (109) records during his complete game win.
The Explorers got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. Alex Llanos singled down the left-field line, and Brandon Jones hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Explorers the early 2-0 lead.
The Canaries took one run back in the home half of the inning. Tim Marks and Juan Figueroa hit back to singles to centerfield. Marks came around to score on a single by James Shanks, cutting the Explorers lead in half, 2-1.
The Explorers extended their lead in the fifth inning. Jason Radwan hit his second homer of the year to put the Explorers up by two, 3-1.
The Birds rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Ben Van Iderstine reached safely on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a walk by Casey Gordon. Orlando Miller gave the Canaries their first lead of the game with his eighth home run of the season, and it was 4-3 Canaries. Matt Imwalle followed with a homer of his own, his league-leading 15th of the year, to give the Canaries a two run lead, 5-3.
Miller hit a double to lead off the eighth inning. Imwalle filled first base after being hit by a pitch. Marks sacrificed Miller and Imwalle into scoring position and first base was occupied when Figueroa was intentionally walked. With bases loaded, James Shanks reached on an error by Explorers' shortstop Ramon Navarro allowing Miller and Imwalle to cross home plate, and give the Birds a 7-3 advantage. Scott Lydy drew a walk to reload the bases, and Cameron Coughlan followed with an RBI walk for an 8-3 lead. With the bases still loaded, Ben Van Iderstine doubled to score Figueroa, Lydy, and Coughlan for the 11-3 final.
Mahomes pitched a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits. He recorded four strikeouts to tie Jamie Ybarra's 1994 total of 109 and won his 12th game of the season to tie Scott Martin's 2001 total. While Mahomes tied two team records, Jose Cordero (0-2) suffered his second loss since joining the Sioux City Explorers allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
Elsewhere, the Lincoln Saltdogs defeated the St. Paul Saints, 7-3. The Canaries are now within three games of the Saints with five games left to play. The Birds will host the Saints for the final three games of the 2007 season, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The Canaries and Explorers continue their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 where the evening's promotion will be "Parrotheads and Pirates" presented by The Topps Company.
