Lakeland, FL - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, found themselves in a big hole early and could not climb out of it, falling to the Lakeland Magic Friday night, 102-80.
Maine (16-23) was led by Boston Celtics Two-Way Player with 16 points. Trey Davis added 16 points off the bench to go with 7 rebounds. Boston Celtics assignee Guerschon Yabusele scored 10 points for Maine, while Vitto Brown added 13 poitns and Daniel Dixon scored 11.
Lakeland (19-18) was led by Jamel Artis with 21 points.
The Red Claws started the game slowly offensively, making just 2 of 11 shots. Troy Caupain's three-point play made it 18-9 Magic. Yabusele paced the Red Claws offense early, but points were few and far between. Former Red Claws draft pick John Petrucelli knocked in a pair of three's for Lakeland. The Magic took a 32-14 lead after the 1st quarter, with Maine shooting 3-19 (16%) from the floor and 0-9 from downtown.
The Red Claws went on a 6-2 run early in the 2nd, but Lakeland answered, extending the lead to 42-20. Dixon drained a three to stop the bleeding. The Red Claws would go on a 10-2 run to get back in the game, with Dixon and Peak leading the charge. Jamel Artis got a baby hook to go for the Magic, and Lakeland took a 56-33 halftime lead after a late three. The Red Claws shot just 21% in the first half (9-42) and 14% (3-22) from downtown, while Lakeland shot 51% (22-43) from the field and 7-11 from three-point range.
In the 3rd, the offensive struggles continued, with Lakeland scoring the first 6 points. Peak stopped the run with a three-ball. Vitto Brown knocked in a three of his own, but the Magic maintained their large lead. Allen continued his strong play with a three-point play, but Artis knocked in another three to put the Magic back up 25. Lakeland led 84-61 after three.
In the 4th, the Red Claws went on a 9-0 run to cut it to 16. Davis buried a three to make it 94-73. Artis' circus shot put the Magic back up 20. Lakeland would cruise from there. Maine shot just 31% (26-85) from the field and 22% (10-45) from three-point range while going 18-27 from the free throw line. Lakeland shot 48% (38-79) from the floor, 41% (9-22) from downtown and 15-21 from the charity stripe.
The Red Claws return home Sunday for a sold out matinee against Windy City.
