Maggio Strikes Five Times To Lift Windsor Over Erie

December 15, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Windsor, Ontario - After a tidy 4-1 win for the Sarnia Sting over the Erie Otters on Wednesday night, the Otters returned to game action on Thursday night at the WFCU Centre. Invading the home of the Windsor Spitfires for the first time in over a year, the Otters would look to get back into the win column - especially in a building they've had success in during the last year. Windsor comes in after downing the Otters in Erie six days ago, 4-2.

Windsor would continue the trend of last game of four goals, as the Spitfires would strike for four in the first period. Matthew Maggio (19, 20, 21) would have a first period hat trick, with Alex Christopolous (21) striking in the middle of the three goal burst for the leading scorer. Erie would get two goals back, as Carey Terrance (13) would strike on the power play, and Taeo Artichuk (2) would give Erie a shot going into the second, but Erie would trail 4-2. Shots would be all even at 7-7.

The Matthew Maggio show would continue in the second period, as the Spitfires' leading-scorer would pick up the only goals of the frame. 10:11 and 10:32 into the period, shorthanded Matthew Maggio (22,23) would put up his fourth and fifth goals. Windsor would outshoot Erie 10-6 in the period, and take a 6-2 lead into the final 20 minutes.

Despite the deficit, Erie would find a pair of silver linings in the third period. Firstly, Erie would outshoot Windsor 16-5 to finish with a 29-22 shots advantage. Second, the Otters would grab the lone-goal of the third period as hometown defenseman Spencer Sova (14) would strike for Erie's second power play goal of the game. Windsor would take the win 6-3, and hand Erie its fifth-straight loss.

The road trip and pre-holiday portion of the season concludes on Saturday night, as the Erie Otters invade the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan, for their third meeting of the season with the Spirit. The Otters will have the ensuing 11 days off, until they play in London on December 28, at Niagara on December 30, and home against the IceDogs to close out 2022 on December 31.
