Maggie Janz Scholarship Announced
March 14, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that a 17-year old Brandon student has been chosen the 2008 winner of the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship.
Saliha H. Malik (Sal-ya), who will graduate from Vincent Massey this June, plans to attend Brandon University this fall, before taking her Pre-Med at the University of Manitoba. She becomes the fourteenth winner of this prestigious Scholarship, which was established several years ago in honour of the former Wheat King volunteer, who served as "director of operations" for the hockey team's 50/50 program.
In addition to serving as a volunteer at Brandon Regional Hospital, Saliha, who was born in Pakistan, is heavily involved with both Teens Against Drunk Driving and YIP (Youth in Philanthropy). YIP is a group of teachers and strtudents, who are given a certain amount of money. With it, they're required to do research on different volunteer organizations and charities in the community in order to determine which one would benefit most from a grant.
"Saliah has demonstrated strong academics, school involvement and the spirit of volunteerism and concern for her community," says Vincent Massey Guidance Counselor Dave Inglis. "She is a worthy candidate for consideration for the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship."
In addition to her work at the RHA, with TADD as well as YIP, Saliha also finds the time to tutor other students and is a valuable member of the Student Leadership Class at Vincent Massey high School. She has also taken part in such events as The Citizenship Court, Support our Troops Campaign, Christmas Cheer, Wellness Day, Heritage Day and Multicultural Day.
The Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship is based on the hockey club's share of Saturday night's 50/50 ticket sales. In addition to the scholarship, Bob Janz, the husband of Maggie will make a special presentation to Saliha before the WHL game between the Wheat Kings and the visiting Regina Pats at Westman Communications Group Place.
Maggie was a victim of a fatal bus crash during a European vacation in 1994.
Saturday night's game brings the curtain down on the Wheat Kings' 2007-08 regular season. Saturday is also Tim Hortons Fan Appreciation Night, with over $1,000 in prizes to be won including coffee makers, a sports bag from Meyers Norris Penny as well as gift certificates from a number of local businesses including Sport Chek, Applebees and Heritage Co-op.
Tickets to Saturday's game or Brandon's first two playoff games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
