Ruth "Gramms" Pollock to Recieve WHL Distinguished Service Award
March 14, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Saskatchewan - The Prince Albert Raiders are proud to announce that long time billet Ruth "Gramms" Pollock will receive a Western Hockey League's Distinguished Service Award for 2007-08. The WHL will present two awards this season, with the other recipient Dr. Ian Hill of the Regina Pats.
In 2004, the Western Hockey League introduced a new award to recognize individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to a WHL Club over an extended period of time. The WHL Distinguished Service Award is presented annually by the WHL to individuals who have worked countless hours behind the scenes in various key areas of a WHL Club operations.
"Gramms" becomes the first person from the Raiders organization to be acknowledged with this prestigious award. She has billeted Raiders at her East Hill home for twenty consecutive seasons, starting with her grandson, Troy Hjertaas in the 1988-89 season.
She came full circle this year when she billeted another grandson, Zach Sim. "Gramms" has billeted up to three Raiders at one time, and currently looks after team captain Ryan White and Mike Small.
"Gramms is a very deserving recipient of this great honour from the WHL", said Team President Dale McFee. "A long time billet who not only exemplifies our loyal fans but is someone we are grateful for!"
Ruth says her top billet players were Shane Hnidy (Boston - NHL) and Mike McGhan, who still attend Pollock family functions. Other Raiders who have stayed with "Gramms" include Donovan Hextall, Richard Seeley, Derek Paget, David Van Drunen, Milan Kraft, Shane Willis, Dane Byers, Rejean Beauchemin and Aki Seitsonen.
Saskatoon Blades owner Jack Brodsky, who is a member of the WHL Executive Committee, and Raider Governor Bob MacDonald will present Ruth Pollock with the WHL Distinguished Service Award prior to tonight's game.
