MacGregor, Mitchell Star in 3-0 Win over Asheville

CHARLESTON, WV - Travis MacGregor, Ike Schlabach and Adam Oller combined to spin a four-hit shutout as West Virginia defeated the Asheville Tourists, 3-0, on Thursday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
MacGregor (1-1) led the charge in the Power's first shutout win since a rain-shortened, five-inning affair on September 2, 2017, when they claimed a 6-0 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds. West Virginia secured their first nine-inning shutout victory since Luis Escobar and the Power blanked the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 4-0, at Appalachian Power Park on July 17, 2017.
A 2016 second-round draft pick by the Pirates, MacGregor tossed six stellar innings in his third Low-A start, allowing three hits and striking out six Tourists. Over his outing, he permitted six balls to leave the infield, four of which were routine fly outs. At home this season, MacGregor has spun 11.1 innings with a 0.81 ERA and 18 strikeouts.
Calvin Mitchell carried the offensive effort for the Power (8-6), smashing a three-run homer over the right field wall in the third inning that scored Lolo Sanchez and Chris Sharpe. Sharpe led off the inning with a single, while Sanchez reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt that Garrett Schilling (1-1) misplayed and threw over the first baseman's head. Mitchell finished the evening 2-for-4 with the aforementioned home run and a single.
Schlabach took over in the seventh and struck out two batters in his one inning of work. Oller (S,1) also punched out a pair of Asheville (3-11) batters over two innings to earn the save.
West Virginia continues its four-game series against the Asheville Tourists on Friday evening, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. Gavin Wallace (1-0, 4.91 ERA) gets the nod against Asheville righty Will Gaddis (0-0, 4.22 ERA).
