PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves swept the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in Friday's doubleheader at Trustmark Park to complete a five-game series sweep. The M-Braves won both games in shutout fashion, 7-0 to improve to 32-22 on the season. Mississippi travels to Montgomery before returning to Trustmark Park Thursday, June 5.
Jason Hursh tossed a complete game shutout in game one of the doubleheader and Braeden Schlehuber drove in four runs to lead the Braves to a 7-0 victory over the Blue Wahoos. Hursh (4-4) gave up just four hits and a walk while fanning one batter to notch the victory.
The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first. Emerson Landoni singled and scored on a Cedric Hunter double to left field.
Elmer Reyes singled and David Rohm reached on an error by the third baseman to start the bottom of the second. Schlehuber followed with a three-run blast into the M-Braves bullpen to extend the Braves lead to 4-0.
Hunter singled and Seth Loman walked to start the third. Joe Leonard followed with a single to right field, driving home Hunter to make it a 5-0 game. Rohm then delivered a RBI-double to right, and a sacrifice fly from Schlehuber made it a 7-0 game.
The Braves scored seven runs on eight hits while Pensacola managed just four hits. Each team committed one error. Michael Lorenzen (2-4) took the loss. He went 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits, a homer and a walk. He struck out one.
The M-Braves duplicated game one in the second game of the doubleheader.
The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second. Kyle Kubitza walked and Elmer Reyes singled to start the frame. Rohm followed with a RBI-single to right field, giving the M-Braves an early advantage.
Gustavo Nunez led off the third with a double to right. Daniel Carroll reached on an error, and Hunter followed with a two-run double to right, making it a 3-0 game. Kubitza then singled to put runners at the corner, and Reyes delivered a RBI-single to center. Barrett Kleinknecht's double to left drove home Kubitza to extend, and Northcraft drove in a run to make it 6-0.
The M-Braves added one more in the fifth to make it 7-0. Kubitza and Kleinknecht both singled. Rohm then followed with a RBI-single to plate Kubitza.
Aaron Northcraft (6-2) worked five frames for the Braves, giving up just four runs and two walks. He struck out eight batters. Mikey O'Brien (2-3) gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. He struck out three and took the loss.
The M-Braves travel to Montgomery for a five-game series against the Biscuits Saturday through Wednesday. In game one of the series, M-Braves right-hander Williams Perez (3-3, 1.92) counters Biscuits lefty Grayson Garvin (0-1, 2.38). First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
