M-Braves Hold off Smokies Rally for Win

July 21, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

Kodak, TN - The Mississippi Braves tacked on insurance in the ninth then staved off a Tennessee Smokies two-out rally for a 4-3 win on Monday night at Smokies Park.

With the Braves (17-14; 56-44) leading 4-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Smokies (15-16; 48-52) got singles from Jonathan Mota and Luis Flores to put two men on and Jae-Hoon Ha hit a three-run homer, his second of the season, to pull it to 4-3.

The next batter Stephen Bruno reached on an error at first base, but reliever Ryan Kelly induced a groundout to third from Addison Russell to end the game.

The ninth was the first sign of life from an otherwise muffled Smokies offense thanks to M-Braves hurler Jason Hursh (8-6). Hursh allowed just four hits in six shutout innings, striking out two and walking three for the win.

Meanwhile, Jose Peraza put on a show at the plate and on the base paths, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and three steals.

Mississippi struck in the first inning against Smokies right-hander Matt Loosen (4-5). Peraza led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a Kyle Wren sac bunt. Cedric Hunter clubbed a ground-rule double for an RBI.

In the fifth, the Braves followed a similar script with Peraza knocking a two-out single, stealing second and coming in on a Wren double for a 2-0 lead.

The game stayed put until the ninth when the Braves tacked on some much-needed insurance. Gustavo Nunez smacked a one-out double and Mycal Jones singled as a pinch-hitter to put runners on the corners. Peraza singled to right to make it 3-0 and keep men at first and third.

On a Jeff Lorick pickoff move to first, Jones stole home to make it 4-0. He was the third M-Brave to steal home in less than a month, with Peraza and Wren accomplishing the feat on June 30 against Huntsville and July 6 against Montgomery respectively.

Loosen allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work in the loss.

Mississippi got scoreless innings from Ryne Harper and Jorge Reyes before Kelly closed it out.

The Braves will try to make it three straight wins on Tuesday night in the second of five games with the Smokies, with right-hander Greg Ross (3-1, 0.98) slated to start against Smokies right-hander Corey Black (5-6, 2.63). First pitch is slated for 6:15 PM CT.

Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:00 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
