Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (33-33) pitching staff dominated throughout the game, but the Birmingham Barons (23-44) pitching edged out a 2-1 win on Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Domingo Robles posted his fifth quality start of the season. The left-hander pitched five shutout innings before allowing a two-run homer in the sixth. Robles is 5-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 63 1/3 innings in 12 appearances, 11 starts for the M-Braves this season.
In the second, Tyler Tolve laced a single into center field to extend his on-base streak to 17 games.
In the bottom of the sixth, Justin Dean smacked a solo home run to left center to make it 2-1. Dean has homered twice in the series, coming back to Mississippi from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
Dean went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. In the series, the outfielder is 6-for-13 with two homers and four RBI. Dean hit an inside the park home run on a liner off the wall in right field on Wednesday. He flew around the bases to score before a throw even came in from the outfield.
Birmingham's starter Matthew Thompson pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed one run, easily the right hander's best start of the season.
The M-Braves bullpen kept it close. Jake McSteen pitched a scoreless seventh inning, dropping to a 2.33 ERA in 26 innings. Hayden Deal followed and got out of a two-out jam in the eighth. Victor Vodnik increased his scoreless streak to 10 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
The M-Braves put two baserunners on in the eighth but went down in order in the ninth.
The fifth game of the series is on Saturday at Trustmark Park. RHP Tanner Gordon (3-3, 3.35) will pitch for Mississippi while LHP Garrett Schoenle (2-5, 5.21) will start for Birmingham. The first pitch is at 6:05 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
