M-Braves Explode for Nine Runs in 9th, Top Barons 14-6

Birmingham, AL - The Mississippi Braves scored nine runs in the ninth inning Friday, breaking a 5-5 tie en route to a 14-6 win over the Birmingham Barons in front of 7,760 fans at Regions Field.
Mississippi took a 2-0 lead in the second as Derrick Mitchell scored from third on a wild pitch by starter Myles Jaye and Mycal Jones brought home Braeden Schlehuber with a base hit later in the inning.
In his first game with the Barons since game five of the Southern League Championship Series, Dan Black belted a towering three-run home run into the Barons bullpen, giving his squad a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Black began the season with Class AAA Charlotte and was transferred to Birmingham prior to the game.
The Braves would strike right back in the top of the fourth, getting a leadoff triple from Barrett Kleinkenecht who scored on a base hit by Derrick Mitchell tying thegame at 3-3. Mitchell would score later in the inning on a squeeze bunt by Jones giving the M-Braves a 4-3 lead.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the sixth with the Barons scoring two runs to retake the lead at 5-4. Josh Richmond led off the inning with a walk, went to third on a base hit by Jeremy Farrell and scored on an RBI groundout by Jamie Pedroza,tying the game at 4-4. After a groundout by Jared Mitchell sent Farrell to third, a wild pitch by Ryne Harper brought him home with the go-ahead run.
The M-Braves rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth, putting runners at first and third against Brandon Hardin. Nestor Molina relieved Hardin and balked home Gustavo Nunez from third base. Manager Julio Vinas vehemently disagreed with home plate umpire Blake Felter's call and was ejected from the game.
Closer Cody Winiarski (1-4, 7.20) was greeted rudely in the ninth, surrendering eight runs on sixhits without retiring a batter. The M-Braves would tally nine runs on eighthits in the inning to take a 14-5 lead. The nine runs allowed were the most for the Barons in a single inning while the 18 hits surrendered in the game were also a season-high. The 14 runs tied a season-high allowed by the Barons pitching staff.
Trayce Thompson hithis team-leading eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Barons fell to 4-4 in the second half and 33-45 overall. Black finished 4-for-5 in the game while Thompson went 3-for-5.
The Barons will look to look to pick up a series victory Friday night as LHP Scott Snodgress (4-6, 4.25) takes the hill against RHP Mitch Atkins (2-0, 3.27). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT.
