Mississippi Braves News Release
Birmingham, AL - Tied at 5 entering the top of the ninth, the Mississippi Braves scored nine runs on eight hits off the Birmingham Barons bullpen on the way to a 14-6 dominating win on Friday night at Regions Field.
Both the runs and hits tied team records for the Braves (5-4, 44-34). The only other time they'd scored nine in a frame was May 13, 2007, also on the road against the Barons. Eight hits in an inning had been done multiple times, most recently May 7, 2013 at Montgomery.
Mycal Jones led off the ninth inning with a single against Barons (4-4, 33-45) reliever Cody Winiarski (1-4), and that set off a chain of ten straight reaching. Kyle Kubitza followed with a single and Seth Loman walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter hit a single to break the tie, and Gustavo Nunez hit a two-run single to make it an 8-5 lead.
Barrett Kleinknecht laid down a bunt single to load the bases again, and Derrick Mitchell walked in a run to make it 9-5. Braeden Schlehuber and Jose Peraza hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 11-5, Jones came up again and walked in the 12th run. Kubitza made the first two outs of the inning with a double play to short, and another run scored to make it 13-5 before Loman mashed a ground rule double for a 14-5 lead.
Ryne Harper (4-3) earned the win in relief, throwing 3 1/3 innings of two-run on three-hit baseball, striking out three and walking one. Winiarski allowed eight runs on six hits and two walks without retiring a batter in the losing decision.
The wild ninth came after the Braves tied the game in the eighth on a balk called against Nestor Molina. Nunez led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk, moved to third on a single and came in on the balk on a pickoff attempt to first.
The game provided a back-and-forth closely contested first eight innings between Braves starter Ryan Weber and Barons starter Myles Jaye.
The Braves struck first off Jaye in the second. Mitchell walked and Schlehuber singled to put men on the corners, and a wild pitch brought in Mitchell for the game's first run. Peraza walked and Jones singled for an RBI and a 2-0 lead.
The Barons got them all back with one swing in the third. A leadoff walk to Jared Mitchell and double to Trayce Thompson set up a Dan Black home run, his first of the season for Birmingham to take a 3-2 lead.
Weber went 4 2/3 innings for three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out two in the no-decision. Jaye went six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and walking four for the Barons, exiting with a lead for just the second time all year. It was the 13th straight Jaye start the Barons have lost dating back to 2013.
Mississippi came right back in the fourth to retake the lead. Kleinknecht led off the inning with his third career triple, and Mitchell singled him home to tie the game 3-3. Schlehuber laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mitchell along, and Peraza singled to put them at the corners for a Jones safety squeeze to take a 4-3 lead.
Birmingham bounced back ahead with a two-run sixth. Josh Richmond walked to start the inning off Harper, Jeremy Farrell singled to put men at the corners and Jaime Pedroza grounded out to first base to tie the game 4-4. Farrell moved around with groundouts and came in for the go-ahead run on a Harper wild pitch.
Thompson homered in the bottom of the ninth off Chasen Shreve, his eighth of the year, to pull it to the final of 14-6.
Now the M-Braves go for the series win in Saturday's rubber match finale at 6:30 PM CT. Right-hander Mitch Atkins (1-0, 2.25) takes the mound against Barons southpaw Scott Snodgress (4-6, 4.25).
