Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. - The Generals (2-7/33-45) dropped their fifth game in-a-row and are 2-and-7 after the All-Star break as the Tennessee Smokies (7-2/40-38) scored four runs in the eighth to rally and win 6-5 Friday in Jackson.
It was a tough night for Tyler Pike (0-0, 2.57) as he made his home debut for the Generals. He allowed the first five batters he faced to reach base and Jae-Hoon Ha and Stephen Bruno scored on a base hit and fielder's choice respectively to give the Smokies the early 2-0 advantage.
With one out in the top of the second, Pike walked the bases loaded before getting Bruno to ground into a double play to end the threat. He was replaced, however, by Forrest Snow (1-1, 3.86) to begin the third.
Snow was able to cool off the Tennessee bats as he went 4.0 innings, retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced, never allowed anyone past second base and struck out five Smokies. He also allowed his team to work their way back into the game.
Kevin Rivers (3x4, R, RBI) led off the bottom of the third with his third home run of the season as Jackson cut the lead to 2-1. With one out Ketel Marte (1x5, R) and Leon Landry (3x5, R, RBI) hit back-to-back doubles and Marte scored to tie the score. Landry became D.J. Peterson's (1x5, RBI) first Double-A RBI as the top prospect singled him home and Jackson took a 3-2 lead.
The Generals increased their lead an inning later as the first two batters reached safely, then Rivers singled to third and advanced to second on an error that brought home Dan Paolini (1x3, R, BB). Jack Marder (0x3, R, BB) followed with an RBI ground out that scored John Hicks (1x4, R) and the Jackson lead was 5-2 after four innings.
The score remained the same until the eighth inning. Charlie Cutler came up with a pinch hit single and Bruno came around to score. Then with two outs Luis Flores singled to bring home Charlie Villanueva and Jonathan Mota followed with another RBI single that plated Cutler and the score was tied 5-5. The go-ahead run came across on yet another two-out base hit, this time from Elliot Soto to score Luis Flores and it was 6-5 Smokies.
Jackson gave themselves a fighting chance in the ninth as they put runners on first and second for Peterson, but the newest General struck out and Tennessee finished off their fourth straight victory.
Snow tossed four shutout innings of relief and struck out a season-high five, but another blown save by Mayckol Guaipe (1-2, 2.65) gave the reliever his second loss of the season. Tony Zych (2-3, 3.72) earned the win out of the bullpen and Frank Bastista picked up his second save.
The Generals and Smokies will meet for the final time in 2014 Saturday at the Ballpark in Jackson. Matt Anderson (2-3, 5.31) will make the start for Jackson as Tennessee will send Joe Gardner (1-1, 3.82) to the mound on Duck Dynasty night featuring Justin Martin. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
