Minnesota Lynx News Release
Magic Number
Minnesota remains a half-game in front of Phoenix for third place in the Western Conference playoff race. After a 5-8 start to the 2004 season, the Lynx have won 12 of their last 18 games. The Lynx' playoff "Magic Number," which is a combination of Minnesota wins and Sacramento losses, is two. Sacramento's next game is on Thursday at Houston at 7:00 p.m. The Monarchs are 1-1 vs. the Comets this season. The Lynx and Monarchs meet Sunday in the final game of the regular season.
Lynx Trax
Charlotte completed a sweep of its two-game season set with the Lynx, beating Minnesota for the second time in four days with Saturday's 10-point decision. Earlier, the Sting picked up a 72-68 victory last Wednesday at Target Center. By defeating the Storm on Friday at Target Center, Minnesota secured its second consecutive .500-plus season. The team needs one more victory to match last year's franchise-high 18 wins. Four of the last five meetings between Minnesota and Seattle have been decided by three points or fewer. The Lynx improve to 6-2 this year in one-possession games, after going 3-4 in that category one year ago.
Road Tripping
Saturday's loss in Charlotte was only Minnesota's second in its last seven away from Target Center, coming off the heels of wins at Detroit (Aug. 1) and Houston (Sept. 1). The Lynx setback in Washington on July 23 stopped a club-record six-game winning streak for Minnesota. Minnesota had extended that streak with a 68-52 victory at Connecticut on July 22. The 16-point win at Connecticut is the second-biggest road victory in Lynx history (82-65 at Portland on May 31, 2001). The team is now in the midst of a season-ending, coast-to-coast road trip with stops in Charlotte, Houston, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Minnesota is one victory shy of tying the club single-season record for road wins; they went 7-9 in both 1999 and 2000 and were 7-10 in 2003. Minnesota began its current 5-2 road run with a 69-66 triumph at New York on July 15.
A Look Ahead
Minnesota travels to Houston for their final game against the Houston Comets this season tonight (Tuesday) at Toyota Center at 7:30 p.m. The Lynx are 3-0 against the Comets in 2004, with their most recent win coming in a 72-64 triumph in Houston on Sept. 1. The Lynx' Sept. 1 victory was their first in 10 all-time visits to Houston. Prior to this season, Minnesota had beaten the Comets just once in 17 meetings (68-64 in overtime on June 1, 2003 at Target Center). The Lynx are 4-16 all-time against Houston.
Following their game in Houston, the Lynx travel west to face the Los Angeles Sparks for the third and final time this season. Minnesota is 0-2 against the Sparks this season, after winning the clubs' first-ever meeting on June 24, 1999 at Los Angeles, the Sparks have beaten Minnesota 18 straight times in the regular season. Los Angeles has already clinched the top playoff seed in the Western Conference.
The Lynx finish off their four-game road trip and the 2004 regular season at Sacramento's ARCO Arena on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. Minnesota holds a 2-1 advantage over the Monarchs in 2004 and is an even 10-10 overall against Sacramento. The Lynx are 4-6 at ARCO Arena. In the team's last trip to Sacramento on May 22, Amanda Lassiter had a season-high 15 points in the Lynx' 69-61 victory. Also in the contest, Tamika Williams hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds and Teresa Edwards dished out a game-high seven assists.
Online Jersey Auction
The Lynx are holding an online jersey auction in support of the Lynx Community Foundation. The auction, featuring autographed Lynx official game-worn player jerseys, can be found on the team's official website, www.lynxbasketball.com, and will run through Sept. 24. The jerseys of the 13 current Lynx players are available for bid. The jerseys for bid are 2004 official game-worn home (white) jerseys, and are autographed by the respective Lynx player. Each player jersey will be bid on separately. The auction will benefit the Lynx Community Foundation and its Tickets For Kids program, which enables underprivileged youth in the Twin Cities to attend Lynx games.
