Lynx claw their way back from huge deficit to win thriller in extra innings

International League Final - Tuesday, June 28th, 2005 @ Lynx Stadium, Ottawa, Ontario

The Ottawa Lynx trailed 8-2 after six innings but rallied to tie the game in the game with two-out in the bottom of the 9th. The Lynx would complete the comeback in the bottom of the 11th, when Bobby Darula doubled home Bernie Castro to give Ottawa a 9-8 win. The Lynx banged out a season-high 21 hits in the victory.

Player of the Game: Lynx 2B Bernie Castro drove home the tying run with two out in the bottom of the 9th and scoring the winning run from first base in the 11th inning.

Key Plays: With Castro on first and two out in the 11th, Bobby Darula lined a ball to left. Castro went to third and then scored when left fielder Jon Nunnally mishandled the ball.

Recap: The two teams would trade runs in the first inning, with Ottawa scoring when Bobby Darula came to count on Walter Young's bloop single. The teams traded runs again to make the score 2-2 before Indianapolis broke the game open. The Indians score five runs in the 5th and one more in the 6th (on four home runs) to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Down by six in the 7th inning, Ottawa would start to chip away. RBI singles by Alejandro Freire and Ed Rogers would narrow the margin to 8-4, and then Tim Raines Jr. hit a two-out, two-strike single to left to score two runs and pull the Lynx to within two at 8-6. A Midre Cummings homer (one of his four hits on the game) in the 8th inning would get the Lynx to within a run. The Lynx would not be denied on this day, as Eli Whiteside led off the bottom of the 9th with a single. An Ed Rogers bunt and a Tim Raines Jr. groundout put pinch-runner Ramon Nivar on third base with two outs for Bernie Castro. Castro promptly lined a single to center, knotting the score at 8-8. The teams remained tied into the bottom of the 11th, when with two out, Castro singled up the middle. Bobby Darula then lined a double to left, moving Castro to third, but Lynx manager Dave Trembley would wave Castro home when Indians left fielder Jon Nunnally could not field the ball cleanly, as the Lynx would come back to win 9-8. RHP Aaron Rakers pitched a scoreless 11th to pick up his 5th win of the year in relief.

Next Game: The Lynx and Indians meet in game two of this four game series tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
