FORT MILL, S.C. --The Pawtucket Red Sox came to town for a four-day series, edging the Charlotte Knights 4-3 on Tuesday night at Knights Stadium to win the first game. Joe Borchard led the late-game charge with a solo home run in the ninth to put the Knights within one, but the Knights lost another close one.

On a rehab assignment from Boston, Curt Schilling is scheduled to start against the Red Sox tomorrow, facing Dennis Ulacia for the Knights. Though now with the Red Sox organization, the trip will be a homecoming of sorts for Schilling, who pitched for the Charlotte Knights during the 1988 season, going 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA in seven starts while collecting 32 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.

In tonight's pitching matchups, Jim Bullard (0-1) made his second start since coming up from Birmingham, allowing four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the loss. Tim Kester improved to 7-4, allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings. Cla Meredith earned his fifth save of the season for Pawtucket after allowing just one run in the ninth.

A two-run homerun from Jeff Bailey put the Red Sox ahead 2-0 in the second. Kelly Shoppach received the leadoff walk from Bullard and scored on the homerun from Bailey a batter later.

The Knights tied the game in the third behind three hits and a sacrifice fly. With one out, Ricky Gutierrez reached base on a walk. The next three batters -Wally Rosa, Guillermo Reyes and Ross Gload- singled to score Guiterrez and load the bases. The sacrifice fly from Roosevelt Brown tied the game at two.

Bullard allowed two more homeruns before leaving the game in the sixth. The solo homerun from Shawn Wooten in the fourth put Pawtucket back on top, and another solo homerun from Luis Figueroa extended their lead 4-2.

In the top of the ninth with one out, Borchard hit his thirteenth homerun of the season to pull the Knights within one, but Meredith retired the next two Knights to end the game and earn the save.

The Knights and Red Sox play game two of the series tomorrow at Knights Stadium at 7:15 p.m. Curt Schilling (0-1 with a 10.50 ERA with Pawtucket) is slated to start for the Red Sox against Dennis Ulacia (0-3, 8.60) for the Knights.
