TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the first of 12 meetings, six in Columbus. The Braves were 7-5 vs. the Clippers in the regular season last year, 4-2 at Columbus. The Braves also beat the Clippers three games to two in the first round of the Governors Cup playoffs last season. The Braves open a six game road trip tonight. Richmond is 7-9 vs. West Division clubs, 4-3 on the road. The Braves are third in the South 14 games off the pace. The Clippers are third in the West, four games out off first. The Braves are 333-374 all-time vs. Columbus. Richmond has dropped four of their last five games.
YESTERDAY'S GAME: The Red Sox beat the Braves 7-2 Monday at The Diamond. The Red Sox blew the game open in the middle innings for the third time in the four game series. Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Brayan Pena. That lead held up until the fifth when the Red Sox sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs. An Adam Stern bunt and a throwing error brought Luis Figueroa home to tie the game. Kelly Shoppach doubled two runs home to put the Sox ahead to stay. Roberto Petagine drew a bases loaded walk to knock in a run. Andy Marte, in his first game back from Atlanta, homered in the sixth to cut the Sox lead to 4-2. Stern singled a run home in the eighth to make it 5-2. Pawtucket added two more runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Mike Lockwood and a Figueroa double. Stern and Figueroa had three hits each. Abe Alvarez earned the win. Seth Greisinger took the loss.
THE ROSTER: The active roster now stands at 24 (12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders, and five outfielders with two players on the DL). The Braves have made 76 roster moves this season and lost 186 man-games to the disabled list. Nine Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and four are currently with Atlanta (Roman Colon, Kyle Davies, Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other five big league call-ups were Marte, Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Seth Greisinger, and Brayan Pena. Five current Braves have seen action in the big leagues this season. Nine Braves have been placed on the DL this season.
CRUNCHY NUMBERS: The Braves have scored two or fewer runs in five straight games. Esix Snead is second in the league lead in stolen bases with 27. Recent R-Braves acquisition Kerry Robinson still leads the PCL in steals with 26. John Barnes is 0-8 since his club season high 10 game hitting streak ended. Brayan Pena has hits in four straight games (5-16 .313). Jason Childers has worked five straight scoreless outings with two saves since returning from the DL. Matt Childers has worked five straight scoreless outings. Over the last 12 games Braves starting pitchers have allowed 20 earned runs in 62 innings (2.90 ERA). The Braves have used seven different starting pitchers in those 12 games. Michael Rosamond is 6 for his last 17 (.353). The Braves have 12 hits in their last two games after hitting just under .300 (.297) in a seven game stretch. The Braves are last in the IL in batting average, runs, and walks issued. Seth Greisinger is sixth in the league in ERA. He is fourth in innings pitched. Braves pitchers have allowed only one home run in the last 11 games.
