Salem Red Sox News Release
Lynchburg, VA (July 31, 2011)- Anthony Ranaudo lacked his best stuff, and the aggressive Hillcats offense capitalized, handing Lynchburg a 10-5 victory in the rubber match of the three game series at City Stadium. The Hillcats plated eight of their ten runs in the third and fourth innings, chasing Ranaudo from the contest in the last of the fourth to serve him his shortest outing at this level.
Ranaudo struggled from the outset, yielding a leadoff double to Keenan Wiley, who later scored on an RBI single by Joey Terdoslavich. After stranding two runners in the first and facing the minimum in the second, Ranaudo experienced a turbulent third, thanks in part to some shaky defense.
Wiley struck out, but reached on a wild pitch, providing a spark for a three-run rally. Phil Gosselin reached on an error, prolonging the inning, which proved costly as Terdoslavich doubled and Joe Leonard drove in another run on a sac fly to put the Hillcats up 4-1.
The Red Sox quickly responded to the Hillcats three-run frame, tying the score at four on Vladimir Frias' three-run bomb to left-field. His third dinger of the season gave Salem life, but the homestanding Hillcats would not stay down.
In the top of the fourth, Ranaudo hit a batter, then walked another before allowing a two-run double to Andrelton Simmons. Two batters later, Terdoslavich singled home a run to knock the Salem starter out of the game. Jeremiah Bayer entered and immediately gave up a two-run shot to Leonard to cap off the five-run outburst and put Lynchburg ahead 9-4.
In his three and two-thirds innings on the bump, Ranaudo was touched up for eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits, raising his ERA to 5.12 in 11 starts.
The Sox chipped away at the deficit in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Miles Head, his third for Salem and 18th overall on the season. However, the Hillcats responded in the last of the sixth on an RBI single by Leonard to reassume a five-run advantage.
Neither team tallied a run in the final third of the ball game, with the Sox recording just two base runners in the final three innings off the Lynchburg bullpen.
The combination of Leonard and Terdoslavich went 6-for-7 with a double, homer, two runs, and seven driven in for Lynchburg. Simmons had three hits and two RBI to raise his average to .296 on the season, tops among all active Carolina Leaguers with enough plate appearances to qualify.
Salem received its production from the bottom of the order, with Head being the lone Red Sock to record multiple hits. Head went 2-for-4 with a homer and RBI. The 2-3-4 combo of Kolbrin Vitek, Bryce Brentz, and Butler went a combined 0-for-12, with Butler's two-walk performance snapping his seven-game hitting streak.
After an off day on Monday, the Red Sox return home for the first of three with the Potomac Nationals. All-Star Chris Hernandez will get the call against Potomac southpaw Sammy Solis. First pitch from LewisGale Field on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
