Skid Pushed To Six - Kinston could not make the most of a first inning run Saturday night in Delaware, watching as the Blue Rocks came from behind to win 4-1 and guarantee a series loss for Kinston. The Indians are 0-6 on the current road trip and hoping to salvage one game to keep pace with the division leading Dash Sunday afternoon.
Starters Stumble - Kinston starting pitchers have been charged with all six losses on the current trip, going 0-6. K-Tribe starting pitchers have averaged 4.8 innings/game in that span, allowing 26 earned runs on 40 hits. In comparison, the Kinston âpen has allowed just three earned runs over 18.2 innings on 13 hits.
Roster Wrap - Kinston's roster has been in flux lately. Reigning League Player of the Week, Abner Abreu has been traded to the Cubs with another minor leaguer for MLB outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. Knuckleballer Steve Wright was placed on the inactive list and on the same day Kinston received pitcher Mike Rayl and power hitting first baseman Jesus Aguilar from Low-A Lake County. On July 29th, Chase Burnette was sent to Lake County, swapping spots with outfielder Jordan Casas, who was promoted.
Hammerin' Holt - Kinston Outfielder and leadoff man Tyler Holt has hit his stride of late, rebounding from a mid-season slump. Holt is batting .319 in the month with 4 doubles and 2 triples. He has walked 13 times for a July obp of .396, his patience at the plate has helped to make him the league's best at reaching base with a 2011 obp of .374. His 62 walks are tied for first in the Carolina League. In 24 June appearances, Holt batted .205.
Hit Me - Kinston blistered the Blue Rocks for 29 runs over the weekend, with double digit hits in two of the three games. At Winston-Salem Kinston has managed just 11 runs on 27 hits. Kinston managed to win just four games in Winston-Salem over the last two seasons.
Comeback Continued - The last five Kinston victories have been of the come-from-behind variety. That includes the current four game winning streak at home. The improbable stat dates to July 18th. Kinston has 24 comeback wins in 2011 and seven in July.
One Run Magic - The K-tribe has pushed its league best record in one run games to 25-11. When scoring first, Kinston also has the Carolina League's top mark, 32-11. Kinston has eight wins over its last nine games at home.
Homer Happy - Kinston's offense is warming up in July with 21 home runs in the month, third in the league. The team's previous monthly high was 18 June jacks. Abner Abreu is responsible for eight of the team's July home runs. Kinston has ten home runs since July 16th.
