Somerset Patriots News Release

Bridgeport, CT - Wayne Lydon and Noah Hall each tallied a home run and two RBIs while the Somerset Patriots bullpen got out of some tight spots en route to a 4-2 victory and a series win over the Bridgeport Bluefish on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Lydon gave the Patriots an early edge six pitches into the game when he lined a shot over the left field wall off Luis Gonzalez. Gonzalez (8-4) got out of the rest of the inning with no more damage and proceeded to send down six of the next seven men before Michael Hernandez was hit by a pitch to start the 4th. Two batters later, Hall cranked a fly ball into the netting beyond the left field wall, putting Somerset up 3-0. Iggy Suarez walked immediately after and Lydon would come up with two outs and line a pitch to left field to bring Suarez home, giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead. Gonzalez, who had won six straight decisions and had not lost a start since July 22, finished 6.1 innings giving up the four runs while walking five, putting in 119 pitches on his day.

That would be all the offense Somerset would get or need the rest of the day as the Patriots pitching staff came up in big spots. Starter Brian Adams allowed just three hits and one walk in his first five innings before the Bluefish walked twice and notched a double to load the bases with one out in the 6th. Adams (4-3) was pulled as Ben Grezlovski entered with the tying run at the plate. The submarining right-hander wiggled out of that first vice with a strikeout to Luis Lopez and a Joe Jiannetti groundout, ending the frame and leaving Adams in line for the win. Travis Minix put two men on to start the 7th but did not allow a run, retiring the side in order after Danny Putnam and Luis Rodriguez notched singles. Minix did give up a pair of runs in the 8th and was taken out after Putnam halved the Somerset lead, driving in Jiannetti to make it 4-2. With the tying run again at the plate, Jerry Dunn entered and struck out Rodriguez to keep the lead intact. Scott Williamson pitched a perfect 9th with a pair of strikeouts for his 11th save in 11 chances, giving Somerset the win.

Adams went 5.1 innings without allowing a run, yielding just four hits and a walk. With the victory, Adams moved into 6th all-time in Atlantic League history with 43 wins, surpassing Denny Harriger and Joe Gannon.

Somerset (37-27, 73-61), as of the finish of its game on Sunday, is a win or a Lancaster Barnstormer loss away from clinching the Second Half Freedom Division Championship and a fourth straight playoff berth. Somerset finishes its road schedule and returns home to finish the regular season with six straight games. It starts with a series against the Long Island Ducks (30-32, 66-66) as Bill Pulsipher (5-1, 3.52) takes on Jake Dittler (11-11, 5.53) with coverage beginning at 6:30 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and www.wctcam.com
