Clinton LumberKings News Release
Dayton, OH - The LumberKings struggled mightily to win games away from Ashford University Field in the first-half of the season, but the same can't be said in the second-half. Clinton dispatched Dayton for the second time in as many nights and improved their second-half road record to 8-3 with a 10-6 triumph over the Dragons at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night.
Dayton's starter Jacob Johnson experienced deva-vu on the mound as he allowed six runs in the first inning for the second consecutive start. The right-hander gave up six in the first inning against Peoria on July 13th. Tonight, the trouble started when he drilled Dillon Hazlett with a 0-2 fastball to put the leadoff man on. The next six of seven LumberKings' hitters reached against Johnson. Jabari Blash roped an RBI double down the left field line, Guillermo Pimentel drilled a two-run double down the right field line and Mario Yepez singled to drive in a pair against a drawn in infield.
Dayton fought back with two runs in the second and two in the third. Clinton starter Seon-Gi Kim struggled through three innings and was pulled in favor of reliever Kyle Hunter. The southpaw calmly retired the first nine batters he faced and pitched four shutout innings. Hunter struck out five batters and in 52 innings has walked only six batters and struck out 46.
The LumberKings offense was back at it extending the lead to 8-4 as Blash homered to lead off the seventh. Blash finished the night 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and his 11th homer of the year. Ramon Morla, Blash and Pimentel combined to go 10 for 15 with six extra-base hits, seven runs scored and seven RBIs.
Dayton scored two runs off Richard Vargas in the ninth to pull within two runs. Hunter notched his first win of the year. The two teams will meet for the series finale on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Clinton has swept an opponent one time this year (Beloit - June 28-30). Clinton sends right-hander Bobby Shore (2-2, 2.95) to the hill to face Dayton's right-hander James Allen (6-3, 4.04). First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 CST.
