South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (47-49, 12-14) stranded the potential tying runs in scoring position in the tenth inning Thursday and lost to the Burlington Bees 7-5 in front of 3,599 fans at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks have lost five of their last six games.
David Mota (3-0) claimed the win out of the bullpen for Burlington, hurling 1.1 scoreless innings. Jake Barrett (0-1) surrendered two runs in the tenth inning and was saddled with his first professional loss. Jonathan Joseph earned the save (7) for a second consecutive night.
The Silver Hawks overcame a four-run deficit to send the game to extra innings. Trailing 5-1, the Silver Hawks scored a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Marc Bourgeois. The Silver Hawks struck for three more runs in the eighth inning. Ryan Court started the scoring with an RBI double before Matt Helm tied the game with a two-RBI double that landed in front of the centerfielder Aaron Shipman. South Bend sent all nine men to the plate in the game-tying rally.
Helm finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The first baseman hit a solo home run in the second inning, his second in as many nights and his eighth of the season. Eight of nine Silver Hawks starters recorded at least one hit.
Rashun Dixon hit an RBI single off Barrett in the tenth inning to break a 5-5 tie. A second run scored following a suicide squeeze from Nick Rickles.
Burlington scored four runs in the second inning and held leads of 4-0 and 5-1. Sean Jamieson paced the Bees, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
J.R. Bradley started for South Bend and did not factor in the decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over five innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five. Kable Hogben worked 3.1 scoreless innings for South Bend, retiring the first ten batters he faced.
The Silver Hawks have played 13 extra-inning games this season and are 8-5 in such games.
The Silver Hawks and Bees play the final game of a three-game series Friday at Coveleski Stadium. Right-hander Tyler Green (2-5, 3.73) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by lefty Chris Lamb (0-0, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. EST.
