BELOIT, Wisc. - The Beloit Snappers (12-14, 51-45) used dominating pitching to sweep the Lansing Lugnuts (15-11, 62-33), 2-1 and 7-1, in a Thursday night doubleheader at Pohlman Field.

In Game 1, Beloit shortstop Stephen Wickens answered Kevin Patterson's second inning RBI double with a two-run single in the home half, lifting the Snappers to the series-opening win.

Snappers starter Jason Wheeler (Gm. 1 Win, 11-4) became the first Midwest League pitcher to reach 11 victories, striking out six while limiting the Lugnuts to one run on three walks and five hits in six innings.

Corey Williams pitched the seventh for his 14th save.

Lansing's Blake McFarland (Gm. 1 Loss, 4-3) battled in defeat, whiffing a season-high six batters while allowing four hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Sidearmer Phil Brua recorded the final four outs scorelessly, serving up two hits and a walk.

Catcher Carlos Perez went 2-for-2 with a single, double and a sacrifice bunt in the loss.

In the nightcap, Steven Liddle's two-run double capped off a three-run first inning against Aaron Sanchez (Gm. 2 Loss, 8-2), and the Snappers coasted to the victory behind a trio of hurlers and the hitting of Miguel Sano.

Sanchez suffered his second consecutive loss, departing after three frames having been reached for three runs on five hits, two walks, one HBP and three strikeouts.

Beloit spot-starter Cole Johnson struck out six in three hitless innings, leading a pitching parade of Mason Melotakis (Gm. 2 Win, 1-0) and Dallas Gallant, combining to hold the Lugs just two hits.

Sano, the touted Snappers third baseman, took care of the rest, providing an RBI single in the first inning, an RBI single in the fourth, and a two-run homer to left-center in the sixth. The 19-year-old now leads the Midwest League with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs.

Umpire Luke Engen ejected a pair of Lugnuts coaches in the game, thumbing out hitting coach Kenny Graham in the visiting seventh inning of Game 1 and pitching coach Vince Horsman in the home sixth inning of Game 2. It was the first time either man had been ejected in 2012.

Seeking to avoid the three-game sweep, the Lugnuts tab right-hander Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 2.93) for the 8:00 p.m. ET Friday series finale. The Snappers counter with left-hander David Hurlbut (3-3, 2.58).

Lansing returns home on a Summer Fun Day, Wednesday, July 25th, opening a six-game homestand at Cooley Law School Stadium. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
