LumberKings thumped, winning streak snapped at 5

Clinton, IA - A five-game winning streak by the Clinton LumberKings came to an end on Sunday afternoon in a lopsided 16-5 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Ashford University Field. LumberKings (3-1, 42-32) pitching surrendered a season high 16 runs to the Cougars (1-3, 36-37) who avoided a four-game series sweep.

Kane County jumped on LumberKings starter Ryne Inman in the top of the first inning to score three runs. Inman would last just two innings for Clinton but was given a no decision for his time out.

In the bottom of the first the LumberKings came right back with three runs to tie the score at three. Joseph Rosa singled to right to open the inning and Eugene Helder beat out an infield single to put two men on with two out. Keegan McGovern then drove an 0-1 pitch from Cougars starter Jhoan Duran 383 feet to right, and into the Lumber Lounge, for his firs professional career home run. The big fly tied the game at three where is would stay until the top of the fifth.

Duran (4-2) settled down following the first inning to earn his fourth win of the year. He worked six innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.

The Cougars broke the tie in the top of the fifth off LumberKings reliever Marvin Gorgas. A leadoff walk to Jasrado Chisholm, single by Yoel Yanqui and two errors in the inning put runners at second and third with nobody out. Gorgas (3-1) then retired the next two batters on sacrifice flies to right that put Kane County on top for good.

The Cougars pulled away from Clinton with a six-run top of the sixth inning. Kane County sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and continued to add on with three runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth on Chisholm's 11th home run of the season.

The LumberKings added an unearned run in the seventh and their final run of the game on a McGovern RBI double off the right field wall in the bottom of the eighth.

The LumberKings will now welcome in the Burlington Bees for the first game of a three-game series starting on Monday night. Clinton will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Oliver Jaskie (3-6, 6.03) while the Bees will tap righty Oliver Ortega (2-3, 3.91). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
