South Bend Cubs News Release
Dayton, OH: The South Bend Cubs have started the second half of the Midwest League season perfectly. On Sunday afternoon, they beat the Dayton Dragons 10-4 to finish the four game sweep. With the four straight wins, they jump into a tie for first place in the Eastern Division along with Lansing.
Sunday's game started like the previous three did in the series. The Cubs plated the first three runs of the game with three quick ones in the top of the 2nd inning. The quick start gave starting pitcher Erling Moreno plenty of wiggle room, but as like the previous three games, Dayton had an answer.
The Dragons loaded the bases on two occasions on Sunday. In the bottom of the 1st, Moreno escaped a bases loaded, nobody out jam with no damage done. He struck out two in a row to get out of the frame. But in the bottom of the 2nd, he was not as lucky. Right after South Bend's 3-0 lead, they answered with three of their own to tie it at 3-3.
Dayton's rally did not phase the Cubs as they went on to score seven unanswered runs from innings three through six.
First, in the top of the 3rd, Miguel Amaya launched his team leading 10th home run of the year over the wall in right field with the wind blowing out. On a solo shot, the 19-year-old Amaya gave the Cubs the 4-3 lead.
Their knockout punch came in the top of the 5th with five runs off of reliever Austin Orewiler. With a RBI already in the game off a double against starter Packy Naughton, Chris Carrier came to the plate with the bases loaded. On a line drive hammered out of the ballpark in an instant, Carrier picked up his fifth hit and second home run with the Cubs in 2018.
Both of Carrier's home runs on the season are now grand slams. The previous came in April on a cold night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
After Moreno exited after four innings of work, reliever Brendan King tossed three innings of one-run ball to keep the lead intact for the Cubs. King earned his third win of the season with five strikeouts in the three frames worked. Right hander Garrett Kelly finished the game with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts. Overall, South Bend pitching struck out 12 batters on Sunday.
The series sweep puts South Bend's record at 38-35 overall in 2018. Tomorrow night, they will begin a nine game home stand at Four Winds Field starting with a three game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps.
Chicago Cubs right hander Yu Darvish will make a rehab start tomorrow night with South Bend. Darvish will become the third Chicago Cub to rehab with the South Bend Cubs. He joins the club alongside Dexter Fowler and Jason Heyward. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
