Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings split Sunday's doubleheader with the Kane County Cougars at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings (2-1) fell in game one 1-0 and then rallied to take game two 8-0.
Tommy Romero started in game one of the doubleheader for Clinton and was given the loss despite 5.1 inning outing of strong work. Romero (0-1) held the Cougars (1-2) to just one run on two hits while walking one and striking out eight.
Yan Sanchez drove in game one's only run in the top of the second inning. With two out, he singled to center to score Yoel Yanqui giving Kane County their lone run of the game.
The run held up as the LumberKings were shutout by a combination of three Cougars pitchers. Matt Brill earned the win for Kane County with 1.1 innings of relief work. The Quad Cities native held the LumberKings to just one hit while walking none and striking out none.
The offense rebounded for Clinton in game two. The LumberKings rode a pair of four-run rallies to top the Cougars 8-0.
Kevin McCanna started for Kane County and settled in early on. The righty was perfect through his first three innings before losing command of the strike zone and failing to get through the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Louis Boyd worked a leadoff walk for the LumberKings first base runner of the game. Boyd was then followed by walks from Ariel Sandoval and Jack Larsen to load the bases. Johnny Adams broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single to right. Ryan Costello then chased home a pair of runs with another base hit to right forcing McCanna (0-1) out of the game.
The LumberKings added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when two more Cougar walks and a fielding error loaded the bases for the LumberKings. Larsen worked a 3-2 count from Erbert Gonzalez before pulling a high fly ball over the right field wall for a grand slam and an 8-0 LumberKings lead.
