Kane County Cougars News Release

CLINTON, Iowa - Three Kane County Cougars pitchers combined to shutout the Clinton LumberKings in a 1-0 win for the Cougars in game one, but the Cougars dropped game two, 8-0, in a double header on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field.

In game one, the Cougars (1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Yan Sanchez. The Kane County pitching staff made that one run hold up. In his first game as a Cougar, right-hander Brian Shaffer tossed 4.2 innings of shutout ball, surrendering two hits and striking out a career-high nine batters. Shaffer was pulled after 85 pitches in favor of Matt Brill. Brill (1-0) didn't allow a run on just one hit over 1.1 innings of relief to earn the win. Abraham Almonte (1) worked a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Clinton (2-1) threatened in the third with runners at first and second and two outs, but Shaffer struck out Ariel Sandoval to retire the side. In the sixth, Billy Cooke led off with a single, but was stranded at third after Johnny Adams grounded out to end the scoring chance. Tommy Romero took the loss for Clinton. Romero (0-1) pitched 5.1 innings, allowed one run, two hits and struck out eight.

Game two was a pitcher's duel until the fourth inning. Kane County starter Kevin McCanna walked three of the first four batters in the bottom of the fourth. Johnny Adams followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0 LumberKings. The next batter, Ryan Costello, singled to right scoring two more runs, extending Clinton's lead to 3-0. A fourth run came across with runners at first and third and one out. Costello stole second. On the throw down, Adams broke from third and scored on a throwing error by Cougars second baseman Luis Basabe. The LumberKings broke the game open in the fifth on Jack Larsen's grand slam.

The Cougars were limited to two hits in game two, both by Yoel Yanqui. He singled in the second and the fourth. Kane County had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth, but back-to-back batters struck out to end the rally against Clinton reliever David Gerber. Gerber (1-0) threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Adonis De La Cruz got the final four outs. LumberKings starter Oliver Jaskie worked around four walks to throw 4.1 shutout innings with eight strikeouts.

McCanna (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing four runs on two hits over 3.2 innings. Erbert Gonzalez yielded four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings out of the Cougars pen. Breckin Williams worked a scoreless sixth.

Kane County heads to Quad Cities to start a four-game series with the River Bandits on Monday night. The Cougars send right-hander Cole Stapler to the mound against River Bandits righty Yohan Ramirez. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Follow the action with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
