Bangor Lumberjacks News Release
Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks announced today the signing of Jay, Maine native Edwin Thompson. To make room for Thompson on the roster the Lumberjacks placed SS Mitsuru Kobayashi on the Inactive List.
In Thompson's debut on Saturday, the 6'2, 195 pound rookie went one for three with a single. In his second game, a 9-8 win by the Lumberjacks over the Quebec Capitales, he came up a home run shy of the cycle, going three for four with an RBI triple. In three games he is hitting .400 (4 for 10).
"Edwin had a great weekend. He provided the offensive spark we needed," stated Lumberjacks General Manager Curt Jacey.
Thompson was a four-year letter winner at Jay High School and was selected as first team all state in both his junior and senior seasons. He hit .509 for his high school career under coach Chris Bessey. Edwin attended Howard University and hit .280 in his only season there before transferring to the University of Maryland, from where he recently graduated.
Kobayashi was hitting .225 with 10 RBI and 8 stolen bases in 25 games before suffering a back injury. The Jacks leadoff hitter will most likely require season ending surgery.
The Jacks return to Mahaney Diamond on Friday, July 4 for a 5 PM doubleheader with the Allentown Ambassadors. It's UniFirst hat giveaway night. All season, 10 pack and 5 pack ticket holders will receive a Lumberjacks hat courtesy of UniFirst. Hats will also be given out to the first few hundred fans through the gate. Gates open at 4 PM. Tickets are available by calling the Lumberjacks Ticket Office at 207-947-1900 or by stopping in the Lumberjacks Pro Shop located in the Bangor Mall.
