Lugs squeak past Caps, remain in contention

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (59-72, 27-35) defeated the Lake County Captains (33-28, 60-71) in a back-and-forth game to open a three-game series on Sunday evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.

With the win, the Lugnuts closed within 2.0 games of a playoff spot in the Midwest League Eastern Division Wild Card chase and ended a five-game winning streak for the Captains.

Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Lansing shortstop Dawel Lugo tied with the game with an RBI single, one of his three singles on the night, and Jason Leblebijian hit a sacrifice fly to give the Lugnuts a 4-3 lead.

Right fielder Derrick Loveless worked a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to add an insurance run, but Lake County reliever Alexis Paredes (Loss, 3-5) recorded a strikeout and a double play to work out of the three-on, no-out jam with no further damage.

Loveless finished the night 2-for-3 with a a pair of walks and two RBIs, while scoring a run in the first inning set up by a stolen base.

Lansing starter Brad Allen (Win, 6-5) earned his third win in his last three starts, working six innings and allowing three runs on four hits.

Closer Brady Dragmire (Save, 4) stranded the potential tying run at second in the ninth inning.

The Lugnuts took a 2-0 lead through three, but after first baseman Nellie Rodriguez doubled in a run in the fourth, left fielder Brian Ruiz smashed a two-run home run to put Lake County ahead, 3-2, in the top of the fifth.

The Lugnuts and Captains continue the three-game series on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lansing lefty Matt Dermody (4-5, 4.43) will make his first start since June 19. Right-hander Dace Kime (7-13, 4.85) will pitch for Lake County.
