Peoria Chiefs News Release
CLINTON, IA- Alex Reyes struck out nine batters over six innings and Ronald Castillo homered but the Peoria Chiefs blew a 3-1 lead over the last three innings and lost 4-3 on a walk-off walk to the Clinton LumberKings Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 67-64 overall and 30-32 in the second half with eight games remaining.
The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead but also missed an opportunity to do more damage in the first inning against Clinton lefty Eddie Campbell. With one out Luis Perez doubled to left-center and Justin Ringo was hit in the shoulder by a Campbell offering. Ronald Castillo singled to right and manager Joe Kruzel waved Perez home where the Clinton catcher was waiting to apply the tag for the second out of the inning. Steve Bean singled to right to bring home Ringo for the first run of the game before Campbell got out of the inning.
Alex Reyes struck out all three Clinton batters in the first inning and had seven strikeouts through his first four innings with just one hit allowed. In the fifth inning Clinton got even as Justin Seager singled to center, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a double by Wil Martinez.
The Chiefs responded immediately as Castillo rocketed a line-drive home run to left field with one out in the sixth inning, his sixth home run of the season. Bean followed with a single and moved to second as Rafael Medina singled. Both runners moved up on a groundout and Bean scored on a Campbell wild pitch.
Reyes locked down the LumberKings through six innings with nine strikeouts and three hits allowed. He gave way to Jhonny Polanco in the seventh and Clinton drew a lead off walk. With one out Nelson Ward beat out a sac bunt attempt and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After a flyout to shallow center, Luke Guarnaccia singled to left-center to tie the game at three.
Clinton won the game in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Jacob Booden. Seager again started the rally with a single to center and he moved to second on a sac bunt. The Chiefs intentionally walked Martinez and Guarnaccia singled to center to load the bases. Booden got ahead of Luis Caballero 0-2 before four straight pitches out of the strike zone scored pinch-runner Martin Peguero on the walk-off walk.
Reyes struck out nine and allowed one run on three hits over six innings with no walks in the no-decision. Polanco allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in his one innings. Booden (0-2) took the loss allowing one run on two hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
