Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Two errors in the second inning hurt the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres) took advantage and rolled to a 6-3 victory on Sunday evening. It was the opener of three-game series, and a six-game road trip for the Hot Rods.
The second inning did not get off to a good start for Bowling Green, as first baseman Alexander Simon was unable to field a throw from shortstop Willy Adames, and it allowed Jake Bauers to reach. Dustin Peterson then reached on an infield single, and Ryan Miller put the TinCaps on the board with a single to plate Bauers. John Nester then hit a dribbler up the third-base line, and the ball was thrown into center field. As a result, Peterson scored and Miller moved to third. He would score when Nick Schulz capped the inning with a single.
A double by Peterson added another run for Fort Wayne in the third. With Bauers aboard at first base, Peterson split the gap in left-center field to send him home Bowling Green cut the deficit in half in the fifth. With one out, Spencer Edwards singled up the middle to kick-start the rally. Willy Adames then tripled to center field, plating Edwards and putting the Hot Rods on the board. The inning was later capped when Simon grounded out to advance Adames home, and the lead was trimmed.
The advantage was stretched back to three when the TinCaps added a run in the bottom of the fifth. Ronnie Richardson led the frame off with a double, and he would later score on a Bauers single. Elias Torres helped cut the lead back to two for the Hot Rods, he doubled home Pat Blair in the top of the sixth, but the game would not get closer.
Fort Wayne scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth. John Nester led off with a single, and he moved to second on a wild pitch then to third on a sacrifice bunt. Trea Turner singled him home to give the game its final margin of 6-3 in favor of Fort Wayne.
Cody Hebner (2-4) struck out eight of the first nine batters, and finished his night with 11 punch-outs while earning his second victory with Fort Wayne. He tossed five innings and allowed two earned runs.
Chris Kirsch (9-7) tasted defeat for the first time since July 5, as the Hot Rods left-hander allowed five runs (two earned) on nine hits before being removed in the sixth inning.
The Hot Rods will need to put Sunday night behind them as they continue to chase the final playoff spot in the Midwest League. They'll be back in action at Fort Wayne on Monday night, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show will begin at 5:50 p.m. CT on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, and first pitch will be tossed at 6:05 p.m. CT.
