Beloit, Wisc. - Terrific pitching and timely hitting helped the Lansing Lugnuts to a 3-1 win over the Beloit Snappers in their series opener at Pohlman Field Friday night.

Lansing scored first when Moises Sierra drilled a two-out, two-run double over the head of Beloit right fielder Yangervis Solarte in the second inning. The hit was Lansing's only extra-base hit of the game, despite having 10 knocks as a team.

Rene Leveret's sacrifice fly in the fourth cut the lead in half for Beloit, as it plated Estarling De Los Santos from third base making it a 2-1 game.

Lansing starter Luis Perez (5-8) didn't much support as he hurled six innings en route to his fifth win of the season. He surrended just one run on two hits in the start, while fanning six. It was his first victory since July 10th.

The Lugnuts added insurance in the eighth inning when Manny Rodriguez trickled an RBI single into right field that scored Jonathan Jaspe, extending the lead to 3-1.

Three Lansing relievers combined to shut down the Snappers over the final three innings, and Tim Collins tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save of the year.

Mike McCardell (7-3) pitched well for Beloit, but was handed the loss. He gave up two runs over six innings while striking out nine. Both runs came on the Sierra double.

Lansing (61-50, 22-19) and Beloit (57-52, 21-20) will continue the series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Marc Rzepczynski (5-4, 2.92) will take the mound for the Lugnuts and face Beloit right-hander David Bromberg (6-8, 4.85).
