Bees Score Eight Runs In Seventh and Defeat Wizards

Burlington, IA (Aug 1, 2008) - The Burlington Bees and Ft. Wayne Wizards combined to score just two runs through the first six and a half innings Friday night at Community Field. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bees scored eight runs en route to a 10-1 victory to open the three-game series.

The Bees scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Jason Taylor doubled to lead the inning off and moved to third on a Clint Robinson fly-out. Nick Francis then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Taylor and give the Bees a 1-0 lead. The Wizards answered in the top of the third by scoring one run to tie the game.

The game stayed 1-1 all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Bees scored eight runs on eight hits to blow the game open. The Bees sent 14 hitters to the plate in the inning with all but one player in the starting lineup scoring a run in the inning. Nick Van Stratten, Johnny Giavotella, Nick Francis, Kyle Martin and Clint Robinson each had one RBI in the inning while Ryan Eigsti had two.

The Bees scored one more run in the eighth inning. With two outs, Van Stratten doubled, moved to third on a Giavotella single and then scored on a Mike Moustakas single.

Danny Duffy got the start for the Bees but did not get a decision. He went four innings allowing one run on three hits and was taken out of the ballgame due to the number of pitches he had thrown. Juan Abreu pitched four innings allowing just one hit to move to 4-4 on the season. Abreu had seven strikeouts in his four innings. Matt Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bees finished with 13 hits. Van Stratten went 3-5 with two runs and an RBI. Giavotella, Taylor and Robinson each had two hits.

The Bees continue the series with Ft. Wayne Saturday night at Community Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. Alex Caldera is the scheduled starter.
