Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Lansing Lugnuts snapped two Cedar Rapids Kernels streaks this afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a 3-1 victory. The first was the Kernels modest three game win streak; the second, a streak of 29 scoreless innings with a run in the top of the 7th inning.
Jonathon Jaspe broke open a scoreless game with one out in the top of the 7th with an RBI single. Jaspe finished the day 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. John Tolisano drove in Lansing's other run in the top of the 8th.
Both starting pitchers threw well - Lansing starter Brad Mills (1-0) held the Kernels to two hits over six innings and struck out eight while Kernels starter Michael Anton (0-1) allowed a run on three hits and struck out six over 6-1/3 innings. Lugnut reliever Cody Crowell allowed a run on two hits, but quieted a Kernel rally in the ninth to earn his first save.
Gordie Gronkowski drove in the only Kernel run of the day in the ninth, scoring Jay Brossman, who had doubled earlier in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 9 games. Anel De Los Santos was 2 for 4 as the Kernels had five hits.
The rubber game of this three game series is Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Gates open at 1 pm. It's a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day which means that fans can enjoy nachos, pretzels, candy bars and popcorn for $1; get autographs from the Kernels on the main concourse from 1:20 to 1:40 pm; play Travel Advisors Baseball Bingo; and run the bases and play catch on the field after the game.
