Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (April 12, 2008) The Burlington Bees won two game in a row for the first time this season Saturday afternoon as they defeated Great Lakes 3-2. The Bees won the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Wilson Tucker that scored Alwin Perez.
For the second day in a row, the conditions were not ideal for baseball but the two teams played anyways. Gametime temperature was 40 degrees and a strong wind made it feel much cooler. Neither team scored through the first five and a half innings as Bees starting pitcher Alex Caldera and Loons starter Steve Johnson each went fiving innings and allowed only one hit. Caldera had eight strikeouts including a streak of five in a row.
The scoreboard finally lit up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Geison Aquasviva came out of the bullpen for the Loons and gave up two runs. Antonio Jimenez led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Todd Balduf then put down a sacrifice bunt where the Loons attempted to throw to third but the throw went to the outfield and Jimenez scored with Balduf moving to second. Perez then picked up an RBI when he singled Balduf in.
The Loons were able to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Henry Arias struggled during the eighth and allowed the two runs. Brian Matthews had an RBI single to score Joseph Becker for the first run. Andrew Lambo hit a sacrifice fly to score Jovanny Rosario.
The Bees went on to win the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Perez led the inning off with a single off of Bobby Blevins. David Lough then came to the plate to sacrifice and Blevins threw high to second to put runners on at first and second. Jason Taylor bunted them up a base. After an intentional walk to Clint Robinson, Wilson Tucker lifted a ball to shallow right field. Perez tagged from third and just beat the tag to give the Bees a 3-2 victory.
Arias got the win after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Ben Swaggerty also pitched out of the bullpen and did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work.
The Bees will go for their first series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Juan Abreu gets the start for the Bees. First pitch is set for 2:00 and the game can be heard on KBUR.
