Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio -Dalton Pompey scored for the ninth consecutive time he reached base and Santiago Nessy homered, but the Lansing Lugnuts (26-40, 58-77) ninth-inning rally fell short in a 6-2 defeat to the Lake County Captains (31-35, 54-79) at Classic Park on Thursday night.
Trailing 6-2 in the ninth against reliever Jack Wagoner, the Lugs' loaded the bases thanks to a pair of walks and a hit batter, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. Grant Sides came on and struck out Dwight Smith, Jr. to end the threat and the game, converting on his seventh save of the season.
The Lugs managed to take an early 1-0 lead thanks to Pompey. After scoring all five times he reached on Monday against Dayton and all three times he reached last night, Pompey led off the first inning with a hustle double and came around to score on Christian Lopes' sacrifice fly. Pompey also extended his on-base streak to 16 games while also drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch.
However, Lansing's early lead would not hold.
LeVon Washington's leadoff homer in the bottom of the first tied the game and then the Captains followed with five unanswered runs against Lansing starter Ben White (Loss, 8-9) in the third and fifth frames.
Joe Sever drove in a pair of runs with RBI doubles in both innings, while Eric Haase and Cody Ferrell also contributed with RBI singles.
Command was an issue all night for White, who battled his way through 4 1/3 innings. He tossed four wild pitches - one of which scored a run - setting a franchise record for most in a single game. His 20 wild pitches this season also tied a franchise record. In total, White allowed six runs - all earned - on 10 Lake County hits. The 24-year old walked two, struck out one and also hit two batters in the loss.
Efrain Nieves pitched very well for Lansing in relief of White, keeping Lake County off the board in 3 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings. Nieves struck out four and walked one.
In the losing effort, Nessy slugged his fifth home run of the season with a solo blast in the seventh inning against Captains' reliever Anderson Polanco, while Jordan Leyland had another multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
Lake County starter D.J. Brown (Win, 3-4) earned the win with five strong innings, allowing a run on four hits. Making just his second start of the season, Brown struck out six and did not issue a single walk.
The rubber match of the three-game series is set for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday night. Javier Avenda̮̱o (8-6, 3.89) will start for Lansing against Lake County right-hander Luis Morel (5-5, 4.93).
