CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels recorded a 5-2 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Thursday night.
A sacrifice fly from Joel Licon gave the Kernels an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd they wouldn't relinquish. Travis Harrison, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on the play.
In the 4th, Mike Gonzales hit a towering fly ball the opposite way and over the left center field wall for a 2-run home run. Gonzales now has four home runs on the season.
The Kernels recorded another pair of runs in the 7th as Michael Quesada doubled home Bo Altobelli and Jonathan Murphy singled to score Quesada.
Kane County pushed across two runs in the 9th, cutting the Kernels lead to 5-2. Rock Shoulders doubled home Jeimer Candelario, and Shoulders scored on Marco Hernandez's RBI single.
Brett Lee (8-4) went 6 innings in the start on the mound for the Kernels. Lee allowed three hits, no runs, walked one, and struck out five. Hudson Boyd threw 2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit. Boyd walked one and struck out one. Madison Boer allowed 2 runs in 1 inning of work.
Promoted from the Arizona League Cubs on Thursday afternoon, Daury Torrez gave Kane County 5 innings in his Midwest League debut. Torrez (0-1) allowed three runs (three earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out two. Brian Smith allowed two runs on four hits in his 2 innings of relief. Matt Iannazzo went 1 scoreless inning.
