Midland, Mich.-Great Lakes starting pitcher Chris Anderson and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-0 on Thursday. With the win, the Loons clinched a playoff berth and eliminated the Dragons from post-season contention. The Dragons fell to 35-31 in the second half.

Great Lakes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no one out and settled for one run on a fielder's choice play. The Loons added two more runs in the sixth, getting four straight singles to start the inning to bring in one run before a bases loaded sacrifice fly scored the other to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile, the Dragons struggled to mount threats against Great Lakes pitching. Dayton had just three at-bats with runners in scoring position in the game, without a hit. They advanced runners as far as third base after two men were out in the fourth and eighth innings but were limited to five singles and two walks over the course of the night.

Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (7-11) suffered the loss. He worked five innings and allowed five hits and three runs with three walks and one strikeouts. Joel Bender tossed three scoreless innings to close it out. Great Lakes also had only five hits in the game.

Daniel Pigott had two hits and a walk for the Dragons. Beau Amaral, Joe Hudson, and Zach Vincej had the other three hits.

The Dragons play at Great Lakes again on Friday night in the final road game of the regular season. Ben Lively will make his first start for the Dragons after 12 appearances at Billings in which he allowed only three earned runs over 37 innings. Lively was a fourth round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds earlier this summer out of the University of Central Florida. Tom Windle (5-0, 2.77) will start for Great Lakes.

The Dragons begin a three-game home series against South Bend on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
