Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Kernels fell 11-5 at Cooley Law School Stadium on Monday night as the Lansing Lugnuts completed a 3-game sweep. The Kernels finished the road trip with a 1-5 record.
Both teams were hitless through two innings, but the offenses picked up as the teams combined for 20 total base knocks. The Lugnuts batted around in the 3rd inning, scoring 5 times. With Andy Fermin at 1st base after a walk, Shane Opitz pulled a double down the right field line. Kernels right fielder Kevin Moesquit booted the ball in the corner, allowing Fermin to score and give Lansing a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Michael Crouse was the beneficiary of a bad hop near the 1st base bag. Kernels first baseman Frazier Hall was ready to retrieve the bouncer, but the ball took a wicked hop off the lip of the grass and hopped into right field. The play scored both Opitz and Carlos Perez, making the score 3-0. After a wild pitch and runners at 2nd and 3rd base, K.C. Hobson laced a 2-RBI single into left field to extend the Lugnuts lead to 5-0.
Matt Scioscia got the Kernels in the run column in the 4th inning with a 2-out RBI single, cutting the Lansing lead to 5-1. The hit scored Frazier Hall, who had singled earlier in the inning.
Lansing got the run back in the bottom of the 4th inning, taking the 6-1 lead. Shane Opitz led off the inning with a base on balls and later scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Carlos Perez.
Another leadoff walk led to a run in the Lansing 5th inning, pushing the Lugnuts lead to 7-1. K.C. Hobson drew the walk and went to 3rd base on a throwing error by Kernels pitcher Shane Riedie as the defense looked to turn a double play. Hobson scored as the next hitter, Gustavo Pierre, grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Zach Borenstein's 3-run home run in the 6th inning brought the Kernels within 3 runs. His 8th of the season was lifted to deep right and trimmed the Lansing lead to 7-4. The home run scored Frazier Hall and Zach Wright, who both singled.
Then the Lugnuts halted the comeback with a 4-run bottom of the 6th inning, taking a commanding 11-4 lead. Back to back extra bases hits scored 2 runs. Kenny Wilson's RBI triple plated Shane Opitz. Carlos Perez followed with a RBI double to score Wilson. Perez later scored on a RBI single by K.C. Hobson. Kenny Patterson's RBI sacrifice fly brought Michael Crouse home.
