Ludtke Tallies Twice, Stars Win

Tanner Ludtke scored in each of the first two periods and the Lincoln Stars opened up the 2022-23 regular season with a 4-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the Dick's Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic on Thursday afternoon at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa.
Ludtke scored 14 seconds into the game and then again at 5:29 of the second to lead the Stars to a season-opening victory. His first goal came off a strong forecheck from Doug Grimes and Mason Marcellus. Grimes collected the puck out of the right-wing corner and found Ludtke in the slot to get the Stars on the board first.
From that point on, the Stars never trailed. Lincoln entered the zone on a three-on-two rush in the second period and took a two-goal lead thank to their second-line again. Marcellus one-touched a feed from Grimes across to Ludtke, who one-timed the feed home for his second of the game. Ludtke surpassed his 2021-22 total with the Stars in 24 games and gave Lincoln a two-goal lead.
That wouldn't last long as Zaccharya Wisdom cut the deficit to one with a goal just 1:01 later on a back-door tap home.
The Stars regained a two-goal lead in the third on their first power-play opportunity of the game. With just over a minute of power-play time following the expiration of Jimmy Jurcev's minor, the Stars cashed in on a shot at the top of the left-wing faceoff circle from Mason Marcellus that clipped a stick on the way to the net and found its way home to give Lincoln its first power-play goal of the season on its first attempt.
Keaton Peters added an empty netter in the final minute to cap the scoring. Cameron Whitehead turned aside 15 shots on net to pick up the victory.
The Stars wrap up the Fall Classic on Friday at 11 a.m. CST/12 p.m. EST against the Green Bay Gamblers, who wer victorious in their season-opener with a 4-2 win over Sioux City.
