Frederick Keys News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - Zac Lowther pitched six scoreless innings and struck out eight to give the Frederick Keys a 3-2 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Friday night at Frawley Stadium. Playing on an MLB rehab assignment, Colby Rasmus went 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. The Keys have now won six straight against their First State rival.
Lowther (1-0) posted his first Carolina League win giving up only three hits in six frames of work. The southpaw walked one while throwing 85 pitches (57 strikes). It was Lowther's fourth quality start of the year.
Frederick (25-32) got on the board in the first against Ofreidy Gomez. Rasmus, Preston Palmeiro and Wilson Garcia all singled to load the bases and Collin Woody added a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
In the third, the visitors plated two more. After Ryan McKenna walked, Rasmus slugged a triple into the left-center alley to score McKenna. One batter later, Palmeiro lined a single past a drawn in infield.
Wilmington (27-34) made it a run-one game in the seventh. After Matt Trowbridge recorded the first out, Kort Peterson singled and Xavier Fernandez and Chase Vallot doubled to cut the Keys edge to 3-2.
In the eighth and ninth the Blue Crew each had chances to tie the game, but Nick Heath got picked off by Tyler Erwin and Peterson hit into a double play.
Gomez (2-4) did not allow a run over his final four innings but was tagged for the loss. The Blue Rocks starter gave up three runs on nine hits in seven stanzas. Erwin tallied the save for the orange and black, allowing two hits over two clean frames.
On Saturday, the Keys and Blue Rocks play the middle game of their series on Saturday. Right-hander Cristian Alvarado (5-4, 3.30) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by right-hander Gerson Garabito (2-5, 4.08). First pitch is at 6:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.
