Salem Red Sox News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Salem Red Sox had an early 4-0 lead but saw it come crashing down in the late innings Friday night, suffering a 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field.

Salem (28-29) only had one hit from the sixth inning on and saw their record dip below .500 just a night after they took a series win against the Winston-Salem Dash. Myrtle Beach (31-29) continued their improbable upswing, as they notched their seventh consecutive victory.

Salem struck first in the top of the third against Pelicans starting pitcher Keegan Thompson (ND). Trenton Kemp led off the frame by slashing a double up the left field line, and Ryan Scott followed him with a dying quail to left that fell in for an RBI double. Thompson allowed Scott to move to third on a wild pitch, and Chris Madera was able to bring him in on a sacrifice fly that ran the lead to 2-0.

The Sox tacked on another in the top of the fourth inning, as C.J. Chatham singled to start the inning before Roldani Baldwin singled him to third. Bobby Dalbec lifted a sacrifice fly to right, plating Chatham and giving the Sox a 3-0 edge.

The Sox extended their advantage again in the top of the fifth. Leading off the inning, Scott yanked a fly to right field that cleared the wall for a solo homer. It was his second homer of the year, and ran the lead to 4-0.

Myrtle Beach finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Hunter Smith gave up three straight singles to Connor Myers, Luis Ayala and Andruw Monasterio to load the bases before Sox manager Joe Oliver yanked him in favor of relief arm Yankory Pimentel (BS, 2). The new reliever fared little better, throwing a wild pitch that plated Myers before surrendering a game-tying three-run homer to Aramis Ademan to make it 4-4. Neither team scored again in regulation, sending the game on to extra frames.

In the top of the 10th inning, pinch-runner Tyler Hill was picked off of second base, and Kemp and Scott each struck out against reliever Jhon Romero (W, 1-0) to end the frame. In the bottom of the inning, with Ayala at second base to lead off, Monasterio dropped a bunt off new reliever Taylor Ahearn (L, 0-1), and Roldani Baldwin's throw to first was wild; Ayala raced around third and came in to score the winning run.

Red Sox starter Roniel Raudes (ND) went four shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters. Jared Oliver threw two scoreless frames of relief, surrendering a hit and a walk while whiffing three. Smith was tagged for three runs on four hits in one inning of work. Pimentel coughed up a run on two hits in two innings, recording one strikeout. Ahearn allowed an unearned run on one hit.

The Sox will try to right the ship as they send right-hander Tanner Houck to the hill Saturday night against Pelicans righty Tyson Miller. First pitch from TicketReturn.com Field is at 6:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 5:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
